Road of Life Serves Over 10,000 Children!
Road of Life has exceeded their 2007 goal of 10,000 children served. As of Friday, May 25, the organization is serving 11, 931 children around the state of Ohio.

The mission of Road of Life is to eradicate preventable cancer and diseases of excess by educating children about the tobacco use, fitness, and nutrition decisions they can make to lead a healthier life. The delivery mechanism for this information is the organization’s Integrated Elementary Health Education Curriculum, which is downloaded or purchased b y teachers, and then integrated into the classroom.

This surge in children served by the organization was due to marketing campaigns targeted towards elementary school teachers, administrators and school nurses in the state of Ohio. The organization estimates contacting over 15,000 individuals with information on the Free Integrated Elementary Health Education Curriculum using this method alone.

Other important contributors to the large number of children served include strategic partnerships and funding from grantors in the organization’s target areas, such as Cleveland. Road of Life was able to reach approximately 3,000 children located in Northeast Ohio as a result of a grant from the Gries VI fund.

MBA students at Dingman Center in University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business have valued the curriculum’s impact to be $300 per child. This value the total impact of the curriculum on the over 11,000 children served well over $3,500,000.

The Road of Life staff is ecstatic that the curriculum is currently benefitting over 11,000 children. "The vision of our board, the financial support of our contributors, and the hard work of our staff have allowed us to meet this goal seven months ahead of schedule," said Executive Director Shane Hankins, "We will continue to conduct aggressive outreach efforts for the remainder of the year."

Road of Life Recieves Google Adwords Grant
Road of Life has received a Google Adwords Grant. The grant will allow Road of Life to receive a minimum of three months of free Google advertising. As a recipient, Road of Life will enjoy free AdWords advertising on Google.com to raise awareness of healthy habits and increase the amount of traffic its website: www.roadoflife.org, which hosts the organization’s free Elementary Health Education Curricula.

Designed for 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations, Google Grants utilizes Google’s advertising product, Google AdWords, which will allow Road of Life to educate and engage their target audience online. Adwords will use short text ads created by Road of Life to advertise their website and free online curricula that will appear alongside of Google search results. Road of Life’s ads will appear when users search for specific keywords such as cancer, health education, health classroom, curriculum, school wellness, health kids, and family health.

Road of Life’s current outreach strategy focuses mainly on educators, administrator, and school nurses in Ohio. The AdWords grant allows Road of Life to broaden the scope of their online outreach to these audiences in other states and leaders in non academic environments, as well as parents and family concerned about their children’s health.

“We are excited and grateful to have received this grant from Google,” said Director of External Communications Robyn Hauser “This is an important addition to our current online marketing strategy, as we will now be able to reach other audiences such as after school programs, academic enrichment environments, and educators in other states that can play a role in helping children to develop healthy habits."

Ned Sackman Joins ROL Board of Directors
ROL staff contacted Ned Sackman, new member of the Board of Directors, and long time member of the Road of Life Leadership Society with a few questions about his recent Board appointment.

Q: What is your background?

A: I am an attorney and I currently work as a law clerk for a federal judge in Philadelphia. Before that I worked for a large law firm. My wife and I live outside Philadelphia, and I grew up in Cleveland.

Q: How did you get involved with Road of Life?

A: I have known the Road of Life founders, Rob and Matt, for a very long time. I was in Matt’s kindergarten class, and I have been friends with Rob since high school. I was aware of the organization when Rob and Matt were starting it simply because I kept in touch with them and knew what they were doing with their lives. I have supported Road of Life over the years, and have been a member of the Road of Life Leadership Society since 2005.

Q: Why do you care about the mission of Road of Life?

A: A: Any organization committed to fighting cancer is likely to attract my attention for both personal and global reasons. At the personal level, I just lost my mother-in-law after a long and valiant battle with breast cancer. On a broader level, it is critical to marshal the resources of a wealthy society such as ours in order to ameliorate the suffering that results from such a prevalent disease. I also like Road of Life’s emphasis on prevention. Given the success preventative healthcare has demonstrated in other areas of medicine, it is likely to be an effective approach to cancer as well.

Q: What do you bring to the organization as a Board Member?

A: My experience as a practicing attorney has exposed me to some of the ways that organizations cope with the problems that arise during the course of daily operations. Ideally, that experience will provide me with a context to draw on as I participate in board discussions and decision-making. Beyond that, it is my hope to bring a passion for Road of Life’s mission that will equal that of the other board members and employees. More than anything, I am just honored to be involved.

Kids Health Hint of of the Month:
Regardless of where you live, there are places for your family to be active. You and your family can be active practically anywhere. The sidewalk in front of your home provides a good place for physical activity, but you can also venture far away to be active. There are locations that are free (hiking trails, bike paths, parks) and community centers, facilities or activities that cost money (swimming pools, sports leagues, dance studios).

Have a family discussion about where your family can be active together. Write down a list of places and hang it on your refrigerator.
