COLUMBUS, OHIO - January 15, 2007 - Road of Life has received a
Compassion Capital Fund capacity building sub-award through the Ohio
Compassion Capital Project (OCCP), a state-wide initiative that assists
Ohio's grass-roots, faith and community-based organizations in building
their organizational strength, capacity and viability. The grant award
will be in the amount of $40,000.
The award will facilitate an important partnership between Road of Life
and the Olde South Side Community Partnership (OSSCP). Specifically,
this funding will allow the two groups to develop a new program that
will combine Road of Life's cancer prevention curriculum with OSSCP's
after-school and summer academic enrichment programs. This new
curriculum and program design will be available to faith and
community-based organizations serving at-risk youth throughout the
state of Ohio.
In addition, the award will sustain the development of a comprehensive
fund development strategy for the collaborative, including grant
templates and coaching. The partnership will also emphasize sustainable
growth, with a goal of cultivating partnerships with faith and
community-based organizations across the state.
This partnership allows Road of Life’s programs to reach more at-risk
youth across Ohio. It helps the organization to further its mission to
raise a healthier generation of children with a significantly reduced
risk of cancer and other diseases of excess. “This is a wonderful
opportunity for us to dramatically increase the capacity of our
after-school programming collaborative. We are very grateful to the
State of Ohio for believing in and funding our vision,” says Shane
Hankins, Executive Director.

COLUMBUS, OHIO - January 31, 2007 - Road of Life: Cancer Prevention for
Kids has announced their plan to reach over 10,000 children in 2007.
The organization hopes to accomplish this goal in part through a
$450,000 individual giving campaign for 2007. The organization will use
the substantial major gifts from this large-scale campaign to provide
effective health education to 400 learning environments including
classrooms, after-school programs and camps.
Rob Emrich, the founder of the organization, is now focused on
implementing this giving campaign, which will bring in considerable new
resources. "The organization has reached a point that we can really
begin to take an excellent program and begin to focus on scaling it. I
am so excited to have conversations that begin with 'how many children
do you want to impact' today. I think this campaign combined with the
leverage of our anticipated and committed new grants and the AmeriCorps
VISTA program has put us in a position to truly affect the next
generation of children." Along with Emrich, board members Jamie Cole
and Nick Fellers will serve as chairs for the campaign.
There are four levels of major gifts for the 2007 campaign.
Benefactor $50,000
Angel $10,000
Visionary $5,000
Leadership Society $1,125.
The approximate cost for a donor to help implement Road of Life’s
curriculum into a classroom is $1,125 which corresponds to our
leadership society level. The $450,000 will be a significant part of
the organization’s targeted $1.12 million budget for 2007.
If you would like help transform the lives of 10,000 children and their families in 2007 You can contact Rob Emrich: emrich@roadoflife.org.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - January 22, 2007 - A recent report from the American
Cancer Society “Cancer Statistics, 2007” reinforces the Road of Life
message: lifestyle choices play a key role in cancer prevention. The
report was cited heavily by the media because it states that cancer
deaths have dropped for the second consecutive year (dropping by about
3,000 from 2003-2004).
Cancer still accounts for more deaths than heart disease in persons
under the age of 85. According to the report, nearly 1.44 million new
cases of cancer will be diagnosed in 2007, over 59,000 of these in Ohio
alone.
The report strengthened the role the Road of Life curriculum can play
in cancer prevention. The 32 lesson integrated health curriculum
teaches 3rd-5th graders about tobacco use prevention, nutrition, and
the importance of physical activity. All three of these factors are
keys in preventing cancer and other diseases of excess. The curriculum
is available for download at www.roadoflife.org.
Research tells us that half of all cancer deaths, as well as many other
diseases are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices. Unhealthy
habits are most often adopted in childhood, and experts roundly agree
that early health education is the best way to prevent detrimental
behaviors from taking root. Road of Life’s programming can help in
reducing not only the number of cancer deaths but also the number of
cancer diagnoses made each year.
