Media Influences can be both positive and negative.
This lesson focuses on how much time children and students spend in front of
the television and ways in which to combat the negative side effects and turn
them into positive results. The lesson includes background information,
discussion questions, definitions, and various learning activities.
Learning activities that can impact the classroom include creating a
glossary with key terms from that lesson. Media on TV is an activity that
allows the student to record food commercials, clips from the news or
educational clips from cartoons or other programs. Print Media involves the
student in reading the local newspapers and clipping out educational articles
that can be shared with the class. Some other fun activities include writing
journal entries, or short essay exercises.
Upon completion of the lesson four, the students will understand that media has
three purposes: educational, entertainment, and advertising. Students will also
be able to understand that not all media sources are credible. As a result,
students will be able to recognize the different types of media, such as print,
internet, and television. They will be able to recognize how the media effects
their thoughts and emotions as well, in order to make thoughtful and healthy
decisions.
