Volunteer Spotlight: Fatima Garuba PDF Print E-mail
This month's Volunteer Spotlight is on Fatima Garuba, a first year medical student at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Garuba was a former CorpsMember with Teach For America in New York City, where she taught 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts and Social Studies.

All first year students are required to complete a Community Project with a minimum of 12 hours for the quarter. This project can be completed with select volunteer organizations in Columbus and serves the purpose of connecting the student's medical education with the needs in the community.

Fatima Garuba feels very strongly about the mission of ROL and the presence it has in classrooms in Ohio and across the country. She believes in children, their potential, and the importance of their health and safety. Garuba wants children to be informed, educated, and empowered to make wise decisions about their health. Children deal with pressures from many areas of life: media, peers, parents, and others. It is important that they know how to distinguish between good and bad pressures, as well as tools to use when dealing with the bad pressures. Garuba also supports the idea of preventative measures. She believes there are immense benefits in taking preliminary steps to protect one's health. Garuba is motivated by the goals set by ROL to educate children with preventative measures.

Garuba contributes to ROL by writing the Middle School Curriculum for health education. Her background and experience in the New York City classrooms have provided her with insights on important skills necessary to be an impactful educator. From teaching, she has learned quite a bit about the needs, challenges, strengths, and expectations of youth. Due to these skills and experiences, Garuba is able to transfer that information as she works on the Middle School Curriculum.

In five years, Garuba sees ROL's curriculum being well established in all 50 states, with the use in schools growing. She also sees an increase in funding to facilitate the movement towards providing better resources and information to further advance the mission of ROL.

Garuba enjoys eating healthy and cooking new dishes by trying healthy alternatives to the things she normally eats. She also enjoys trying interesting foods while maintaining a balanced diet.
