COLUMBUS,
OHIO – February 16, 2007- The
latest free version of Road of Life’s elementary health curriculum was released
on www.roadoflife.org on February 15,
2007. Version 3.0 of the organization’s
innovative health curriculum offers 3rd, 4th and 5th
grade students with an academically rigorous health education curriculum that
incorporates core academic subjects (math, science, language arts and social
studies) and meets both National Health Education Standards and Ohio State
Academic Content Standards.
This new addition to Road of Life’s array of health
education resources will provide students with vital knowledge about how to
develop healthy habits (good nutrition, regular physical activity and tobacco
use prevention) in order to improve and maintain their physical, mental and
social health.
Version 3.0 is also designed with educators’ needs in
mind. Each lesson includes a cover page
detailing which National Health Education Standards and State Academic Content
Standards it meets as well as goals for the lesson and learning outcomes.
Teachers are also provided with an alignment chart to see in detail which
standards each lesson meets. In
addition, a variety of performance indicators help the teacher to determine
students’ comprehension of the material.
The curriculum was developed by Road of Life’s programming
staff, Denisha Garland, MPH and Ann Lewicki, MPH, CHES. Each lesson was
reviewed by the Road of Life Curriculum Advisory Committee composed of
education professionals for content accuracy and ease of use.
“I think Version 3.0 of the curriculum is the best of both
worlds. Not only does it teach students
about healthy decision-making and lifestyle choices, but it addresses core
academic content areas. It is effective
and efficient for teachers and students alike,” says Denisha
Garland, Director of Program Development at Road of Life.
