3. Ask what happened in the commercial and what product is being sold
4. Explain that commercials use a variety of techniques to get people’s attention
5. Next time your students see a commercial, ask them to identify the techniques used:
a. Spokesperson – a celebrity saying good things about the product
b. Repetition – commercials will be replayed over and over so people will remember it
c. Excitement and Fun – commercials will show people using their products and doing fun or exciting things
6. Explain the importance of “fact” and “opinion”
a. Fact – information based on proof or evidence
b. Opinion – a personal attitude or a belief that cannot be proven
7. Express the importance of making choices based on factual information that is presented, especially those commercials dealing with unhealthy food or unhealthy activities
