Executive Director Shane Hankins, along with Board Member Jamie Cole unveiled the new ROL Healthy Camp Program at the Tri-State Camp Conference hosted by the American Camping Association in Atlantic City this month.
In its 26th year, The Tri-State Camp Conference continues to be the most important "off-season" event for nearly 4,000 attendees each year. Camp professionals, seasonal staff, youth development professionals, and "out of school" experiential educators gather annually to participate in over 200 program sessions, visit the 300 booth exhibit hall, and network amongst a group of people dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of children.

ROL was fortunate to be able to participate in this event. ROL introduced its Healthy Camp Program that will accredit camps for following healthy practices. Through interactive dialogue about nutrition/meal preparation and education, active programming, sunscreen application, anti-smoking regulations, and proper staff training, many camp owners left the conference intrigued about pursuing the ROL accreditation.

Jamie Cole, owner of Camp Robin Hood in Freedom, NH stated that "the presentation was well-received by the camping industry as they learned how they too could run a 'healthy camp'. It is clear that no one is doing what we are, yet there is interest in adopting our sound practices. As with any new idea, the challenge will be in continuing to educate our target audience on the value of what's being offered, the ease of the process involved, and the economic feasibility." ROL is thankful to Jamie Cole who worked closely with ROL to create this program. She has already put into effect the ROL healthy camp practices at Camp Robin Hood and has had much success.

Camps are yet another venue for ROL to reach children nationwide. ROL is eager to expand its presence in the camp setting and is happy with the strong interest from leaders in the camping community.
