The partnership between MetroHealth System in Cleveland and Road of Life: Cancer Prevention for Kids continues to flourish. A full-time staff person from ROL, Anuprit Kaur, was relocated in August to open the first regional office at the MetroHealth System. Over the past months, Kaur has worked with hospital and ROL staff to create and implement the new Health Careers Program. The Health Careers Program and evaluation was co-branded by MetroHealth and ROL to be implemented in the Cleveland area, where it will supplement ROLs existing Elementary Classroom Curriculum.

The primary purpose of this partnership was to create and deliver joint health education programming targeting at-risk youth in Northeast Ohio. After much hard work, the implementation is well on its way. ROL’s programming has been integrated into the pilot groups of three Cleveland Municipal elementary schools: Scranton Elementary, Luis Munoz Marín Elementary, and Orchard Elementary. The students experienced first-hand the general concepts of health through the Classroom Curriculum, which focuses on general health, nutrition, physical activity, and tobacco use prevention.

Currently, the students are going through the Health Careers Program. The Health Careers Program consists of a health careers curriculum, which is taught in the school setting. The curriculum is supplemented by health professionals from the MetroHealth System who will visit the classrooms to share their experiences and serve as mentors. There are over 40 health professionals from the hospital who are eager to speak to the students. The stable of professionals consists of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, EMTs, X-ray techs, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, social workers, dietitians, and more. The volunteers are not only speaking to the children but also making the presentations interactive by role playing, bringing in devices that they use every day, and letting the children tell their personal stories.

By exposing the children to this program, MetroHealth System and ROL hope to diversify the future workforce and make a positive impact on the community.
