Kids Health Hint of the Month:

Nine out of ten parents believe their children are physically fit, but in reality only one in three children are physically active. The majority of children do not know the difference between low- and high-energy activities.
Have a discussion and ask children to name low- and high-energy activities. Explain that low-energy activities include reading or doing homework. High-energy activities include running, playing four square, and hopscotch. Explain that many daily activities are low-energy, so there has to be an extra effort to make sure they do at least one high-energy activity every day. Ask children why they think it is important to do one high-energy activity every day.

Explain that high-energy activities:
• Give the heart a good workout and make it stronger
• Make muscles and bones stronger which help us grow
• Improve the immune system which makes us less likely to get sick
• Make us feel more energetic and better able to concentrate on schoolwork

Doing low- and high-energy activities are important because they provide a balance. All children two years and older should get sixty minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise on most, preferably all, days of the week.
