COLUMBUS, OHIO, November 27, 2006 -Portions of the Road of Life elementary health education curriculum are featured in A Lion in the House’s Community Service Kit. The kit, designed for teenagers and adult leaders interested in community service, came to fruition following the premiere of A Lion in the House, a documentary film by Academy Award-winning filmmakers Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert.

The film premiered at the Wexner Center for the Arts in May, marking the start of a national youth cancer outreach campaign backed by the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control.  It presents an intimate look at the journey of five young cancer patients, their families, and their caretakers.  The documentary provides an in-depth exploration of the effects of cancer not only on the patients, but also on their siblings and the extended community.

Melissa Godoy, Diane Smiley and a host of other individuals involved with A Lion in the House community service kit project, have brought the important life lessons which are raised in the film to teens.  Two of Road of Life’s health education lessons, personal goal setting community healthy activity mapping are included in the kit.  The kit is separated into four content areas, each of which details the impact of a cancer diagnosis on families, siblings, friends and health care providers.  The lessons from Road of Life’s curriculum can be found in the impact of cancer on families section within the personal power grid unit.

“We are very pleased to have vital health content from Road of Life’s curriculum included in the A Lion in the House community service kit.  We are always looking to partner with groups whose goals align with ours.  Our partnership with the individuals behind the A Lion in the House community service kit is another way we can make a difference,” says Denisha Garland, MPH, Director of Program Development.

This partnership will help Road of Life as the organization grows and expands its impact over the next year.  Working with A Lion in the House will enable Road of Life to instill healthy habits in a greater number of children nationwide, as A Lion in the House’s online resources are readily accessible to anyone with internet access.
